The beautiful Swaledale is a wonderful place to be at any time of the year. The Burgoyne Hotel is ideally located to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in England, whether it is the winter months with the snow peaked valleys of the Yorkshire Dales or soaking up the glorious sunshine, the beauty outweighs the weather.
In the most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Swaledale has an identity of its own. The stone walls, sheep grazed pastures, small hamlets, villages, shooting lodges, farmsteads and stone cottages are steeped in history yet part of a living landscape. They are farmed by generations of families, managed by gamekeepers, shaped by communities of the past and looked after by those who live and work within the dale today. Swaledale is a tranquil retreat full of warmth and hospitality waiting to be discovered.
Arkengarthdale meets Swaledale on the doorstep of Reeth. This dramatic dale only a few short miles in length is a tributary valley of Swaledale scattered with remote farmsteads and hamlets perfect to get lost in. They are tantalisingly named Booze, Whaw and the tiny settlement of Arkle Town. The road winds its way westwards up the dale and onto the Pennines and passes the door of the highest pub in England, Tan Hill. It is a breath-taking backdrop to a perfect hotel.
No matter what season you visit, Reeth and Swaledale have an abundance of pleasures to offer. Spring brings new life: lambs, wild flower meadows and nesting birds. Summer has long days with plenty of time for enjoying hill walking, picnics, touring or simply admiring the spectacular scenery. Autumn displays the purple hues of heather moor tops in the Yorkshire Dales and a wealth of colours as the leaves begin to turn orange. Winter can never be understated, with crisp days and the comfort of a warm log fire to return to. No matter what season you prefer it is waiting to be discovered and photographers will be in their element with so much natural beauty to be soaked up.
