Testimonials & Reviews

  • Close to perfection

Our pre-arrival expectations were high on account of timely and considerate email exchanges. Our hopes were then realised to the full, by the supremely thoughtful, rapid and helpful service from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, by the truly wonderful, creative, cheffy food in our BBEM package and by the ever-so-slightly-faded grandeur of the building and garden. A cosy lounge, quality bedlinen, frequent towel changes and a host of small touches all contributed to making us feel valued, so that, in short, the hotel did its primary job of making us feel not just good, but very good indeed.

  • Made us delicious vegan food off menu

We stayed for 2 nights and are all vegan. While the menu isn’t very vegan friendly, the chef worked so hard to come up with completely amazing food off menu both evenings for us. (Thank you!) It was completely delicious and very much appreciated. So I recommend telling them in advanced of dietary requirements and you will be well catered for!

The lady who runs it is also lovely and astonishingly hardworking and the views from the rooms are very impressive!
It isn’t cheap, but you WILL have a lovely visit.

  • Luxurious romantic birthday surprise!

We stayed here as a birthday surprise for my husband. A very charming hotel in a beautiful setting, We stayed our first night in the Fremongton room which was lovely and clean, luxurious and quiet. This was on the back of the hotel but still had views.

Our second night we stayed in the Ivelet room on the top floor. Just WOW!! Huge, beautiful luxurious room and bathroom stunning views and again very quiet. It was so relaxing and really did make our weekend. Nothing is too much trouble and show hospitality at its best. You can tell all the staff are a tight knit team who work together so well. The housekeeers also offered to carry out bags up to the second room for us and were very helpful.

The food was amazing, just delicious with everything cooked to perfection.

I would totally recommend this hotel and will definitely be back. I also fell in love with Reeth, it’s just stunning!👍👍👍👍👍

  • Excellent hotel in lovely location

We stayed for 3 nights in Ivelet, a large and well appointed room on the second floor with views over the village green to the fells beyond. Huge en-suite. Very comfy bed. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent food in the dining room with small but well prepared portions. 👍👍👍👍👍

  • Outstanding

Our first time in years that we stayed in Reeth, The Burgoyne hotel was a excellent choice, absolutely stunning views, excellent bedroom & Bathroom, great off road parking (with charging point for electric cars). The evening meal was probably one of the best I’ve had in a hotel. Fantastic choices on the menu and a very good wine list. Breakfast was excellent and sets you up for the day. Reeth is very central for lots of beautiful walks.

Without doubt we’ll be returning to this hotel and would certainly recommend it.👍👍👍👍👍

Beautiful Walks Close By

Explore the beautiful Yorkshire Dales right from the front door of The Burgoyne

There is nothing better than spending a few hours walking amongst the beauty of the wonderful Yorkshire Dales, and then returning to your room at The Burgoyne for a soak in the bath and an award-winning meal in the 1783 restaurant. There are so many walks to choose from, so to help you we have listed some of favourites, with details of their length and links to further details and guides. We start with walks you can do right from the door of the hotel, then a couple which are three miles down the road, and then extend a little further out to walks which are a short drive from Reeth, around the villages of Askrigg and Aysgarth. We even add a couple of local attractions which are worth visiting along the way.

Walks in and around Reeth

Reeth Round

This is a lovely circular trail from the village, taking you through woodlands and farmlands and along the river where you might see some wildlife. It’s less than four miles long and is likely to take less than two hours to complete. Dogs are welcome but will need to be on a lead for much of the walk. You will enjoy some fabulous views of the Dales along the route. Reeth Round: 140 Reviews, Map - North Yorkshire, England | AllTrails

Booze Circular

This walk starts 3 miles up the road from The Burgoyne. Sadly the title of the walk refers to the tiny hamlet of Booze, and not to refreshments along the way! This is a fabulous walk of about five and a half miles, which is likely to take less than three hours to complete. You will walk through some of the area’s best attractions, and you are unlikely to bump into many, if any, other people on this quiet walk. Booze Circular: 15 Reviews, Map - North Yorkshire, England | AllTrails

Gunnerside Gill

If a longer walk is what you are after, the Gunnerside Gill walk starts in Melbecks, just three miles from The Burgoyne. It is roughly nine and a half miles long, and will take around five hours to complete. There are stunning views of the open rolling hills as well as a variety of historic sites to explore along the way. The area is always relatively quiet so you are unlikely to meet many others along this stunning walk. Gunnerside Gill: 16 Reviews, Map - North Yorkshire, England | AllTrails

Walks from and around the village of Askrigg

Askrigg is a charming village located in the heart of Wensleydale. It is a popular base for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, with lots of fantastic walks starting right from the village. Here are some suggestions, along with a couple of local places of interest for more leisurely days out.

Askrigg Falls and Mill Gill Force Walk

This circular walk starts right in the centre of the village and takes you through Askrigg and up to Mill Gill Force, a picturesque and largely undiscovered waterfall. The walk is around three miles long and takes about two hours to complete at a leisurely pace.  Mill Gill Force and Whitfield Gill Force Waterfalls Walk (walkingenglishman.com)

Askrigg to Carperby Walk

Another circular walk starting from the village. This one is a bit longer at nine miles, so we suggest allowing four to five hours. Along the way you will see some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole of the UK, heading out along a high-level path in Upper Wensleydale and returning alongside the tranquil River Ure. A stop halfway round for refreshments at the Wheatsheaf Inn at Carperby is a popular choice!  Askrigg and Carperby walk | The Westmorland Gazette

Yorkshire 3 Peaks

If you are looking for an all-day challenge to take on, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, starting at Ribblehead Viaduct, is an easy half hour drive away from Skeldale House. 24 miles long, with more than 5,000 feet of climbing makes this a serious all day hike. You need to be prepared for some challenging terrain and changeable weather, and take plenty of food and drink to get you through the day. You can expect to take around 10 hours to complete the route so please make sure you set off early so you don’t run out of daylight. The route is well marked and the sense of achievement when you’ve completed it is something which will stay with you for a very long time. Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge route

Wensleydale Creamery

One of the nation's most well-known cheeses, and the firm favourite of Wallace and Gromit! Take a walk around the free cheese tasting experience, have some lunch in the coffee shop and take home a little something from the gift shop. Wensleydale Creamery - Artisan Cheese, Gifts & Hampers

Walks from and around the village of Aysgarth

Aysgarth is a picturesque village located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. It is famous for its amazing waterfalls, which have been featured in many films and TV shows.

Aysgarth Falls Walk

This walk takes you to the famous Aysgarth Falls, a series of three stunning waterfalls which have inspired poets and painters across the centuries. The walk is around two miles long and takes about one hour to complete. Along the way, you will enjoy stunning views of the falls and the surrounding countryside. Aysgarth Woods and Waterfalls Circular: 490 Reviews, Map - North Yorkshire, England | AllTrails

Circular Walk via Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle

This walk takes you from Aysgarth to the nearby village of Castle Bolton with its castle ruins and landscaped gardens. It is around six miles long and takes about three hours to complete. Along the way, you will pass through some picturesque countryside and enjoy stunning views of the castle and the surrounding countryside. Bolton Castle

One of the country’s best preserved medieval castles, originally built as one of the finest and most luxurious homes in the land, the castle bears the scars of over 600 years of fascinating history. A great trip for history lovers, or a place to spend the day at with your family, with falconry experiences, a fabulous tea room and beautiful gardens.
