Testimonials & Reviews

  • Close to perfection

Our pre-arrival expectations were high on account of timely and considerate email exchanges. Our hopes were then realised to the full, by the supremely thoughtful, rapid and helpful service from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, by the truly wonderful, creative, cheffy food in our BBEM package and by the ever-so-slightly-faded grandeur of the building and garden. A cosy lounge, quality bedlinen, frequent towel changes and a host of small touches all contributed to making us feel valued, so that, in short, the hotel did its primary job of making us feel not just good, but very good indeed.

  • Made us delicious vegan food off menu

We stayed for 2 nights and are all vegan. While the menu isn’t very vegan friendly, the chef worked so hard to come up with completely amazing food off menu both evenings for us. (Thank you!) It was completely delicious and very much appreciated. So I recommend telling them in advanced of dietary requirements and you will be well catered for!

The lady who runs it is also lovely and astonishingly hardworking and the views from the rooms are very impressive!
It isn’t cheap, but you WILL have a lovely visit.

  • Luxurious romantic birthday surprise!

We stayed here as a birthday surprise for my husband. A very charming hotel in a beautiful setting, We stayed our first night in the Fremongton room which was lovely and clean, luxurious and quiet. This was on the back of the hotel but still had views.

Our second night we stayed in the Ivelet room on the top floor. Just WOW!! Huge, beautiful luxurious room and bathroom stunning views and again very quiet. It was so relaxing and really did make our weekend. Nothing is too much trouble and show hospitality at its best. You can tell all the staff are a tight knit team who work together so well. The housekeeers also offered to carry out bags up to the second room for us and were very helpful.

The food was amazing, just delicious with everything cooked to perfection.

I would totally recommend this hotel and will definitely be back. I also fell in love with Reeth, it’s just stunning!👍👍👍👍👍

  • Excellent hotel in lovely location

We stayed for 3 nights in Ivelet, a large and well appointed room on the second floor with views over the village green to the fells beyond. Huge en-suite. Very comfy bed. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent food in the dining room with small but well prepared portions. 👍👍👍👍👍

  • Outstanding

Our first time in years that we stayed in Reeth, The Burgoyne hotel was a excellent choice, absolutely stunning views, excellent bedroom & Bathroom, great off road parking (with charging point for electric cars). The evening meal was probably one of the best I’ve had in a hotel. Fantastic choices on the menu and a very good wine list. Breakfast was excellent and sets you up for the day. Reeth is very central for lots of beautiful walks.

Without doubt we’ll be returning to this hotel and would certainly recommend it.👍👍👍👍👍

Exploring the Enchanting Summer of Swaledale

The Allure of Swaledale’s Landscapes

As the summer sun casts its warm glow over Swaledale, the dale comes alive with an explosion of colour and life. The rolling hills and meadows are carpeted with wildflowers such as buttercups, bluebells, and foxgloves, creating a picturesque setting that feels like a scene straight out of a storybook. The gentle babbling of the River Swale as it winds through the valley adds to the serene ambiance, making it the perfect backdrop for leisurely walks and picnics.

Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

Swaledale is a paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The summer season opens up a network of trails that cater to all levels of fitness and experience. The Coast to Coast Walk, passes through Swaledale and our very own beautiful village of Reeth, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Another popular route is the Swale Trail, a family-friendly path that runs from Reeth to Keld, providing opportunities to explore charming villages, historical sites, and breathtaking landscapes along the way.

Discovering Swaledale’s Villages

The villages of Swaledale are brimming with character and charm. Reeth, often considered the heart of Swaledale, hosts a lively weekly market where you can find local produce, crafts, and artisanal goods. The village green is a perfect spot to relax and take in the views, and the local pubs offer hearty meals and refreshing ales, often brewed locally.

Muker Meadows

Muker, another quintessential Swaledale village, is renowned for its traditional hay meadows, which are a sight to behold in summer. The Muker Meadows are a haven for biodiversity, attracting botanists and nature lovers from far and wide. The village itself boasts a charming tea shop and the Swaledale Woollens shop, where you can purchase locally made woollen goods.

Cultural and Historical Attractions

Swaledale’s rich history is woven into its landscape. The lead mining heritage of the region is evident in places like the Old Gang Smelt Mill and the remains of mining structures scattered across the dale. These sites offer a glimpse into the industrial past that once dominated the area.

Old Gang Smelt Mill

For a taste of local culture, the Swaledale Festival, held annually in late May and early June, is a must-visit. This vibrant event celebrates music, arts, and literature, attracting performers and visitors from across the country. The festival's diverse programme includes classical concerts, folk music, art exhibitions, and guided walks, providing a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Wildlife and Nature

Swaledale’s varied habitats support a rich diversity of wildlife. Birdwatchers will be delighted by sightings of curlews, lapwings, and yellowhammers, among other species. The meadows and moorlands are alive with the hum of bees and the fluttering of butterflies, making it a perfect destination for anyone with an interest in nature photography or simply enjoying the tranquil beauty of the natural world.

Farm Life and Rural Traditions

Summer is a busy time in Swaledale's agricultural calendar. Visitors can witness the traditional practice of sheep shearing, a vital activity for the local farming community. Many farms open their gates to tourists, offering a unique opportunity to experience rural life firsthand. You might even have the chance to participate in or watch sheepdog demonstrations, which showcase the remarkable skills of these intelligent animals and their handlers.

Activities for All Ages

Swaledale caters to visitors of all ages and interests. Families can enjoy gentle walks suitable for children, cycling along the quiet country lanes, or even pony trekking through the scenic landscapes. The natural play areas and picnic spots scattered throughout the dale provide perfect settings for family outings and adventures.
